Efficient risk management by means of simulation

Simulations are a suitable instrument for aggregating quantified risks and opportunities. Individual risks are assigned to probability distributions (usually by means of expert estimates). The practicality of the distributions used is based on their ease of understanding and flexibility. Depending on the distribution, the quality and accuracy of the results can also vary.

House distribution

antares RiMIS® now offers the possibility to simulate risks and opportunities in addition to the usual distribution functions with a special distribution adapted to practical considerations, which we call "house distribution" due to its characteristic shape.

Specifically, it offers the following advantages:

  • Significantly higher flexibility than the common triangular distribution.
  • Highly realistic due to weighting factors.
  • Optimally adaptable to the respective risk.
The procedure here is that, in contrast to the triangular distribution, which has defined the values of minimum and maximum as zero, the best case and worst case scenarios can be represented with so-called weighting factors, which correspond to the relative (scenario) probability when entered. Unlike the triangular distribution, the house distribution can assume a positive density at the minimum and maximum. This can be seen in the example diagrams (right).

Workshop

In addition, the probability of occurrence of the risks can also be specified (global probability of occurrence). If this probability of occurrence is e.g. 10 %, the occurrence of the risk is calculated on average only in every 10th simulation run by means of the house distribution, while in all other simulation runs the simulated value is 0.
