What is ESG reporting software?

ESG reporting software is an indispensable tool for companies to make their ESG reporting efficient and compliant.

ESG reporting refers to structured reporting on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. Not only does voluntary disclosure in the context of corporate social responsibility (CSR) play a role here, but increasingly also the fulfillment of legal requirements such as the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD ) and the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR).

ESG reporting software as a solution for complex requirements
The introduction of the EU taxonomy, which defines sustainable economic activities, and the European Green Deal, which aims to achieve a climate-neutral economy by 2050, present companies with new challenges. A ESGreporting software supports the implementation of these requirements by centrally collecting, analyzing and structuring extensive environmental, social and corporate governance data.

With such software, companies can:

  • Consolidate data and present it in accordance with current reporting requirements.
  • Creating transparency and promoting sustainable investments.
  • Communicate your ESG strategy credibly and effectively.
Sustainability and competitive advantages

Well-founded ESG reporting enables companies to anchor sustainability as an integral part of their business strategy. Specialized reporting solutions help to use resources more efficiently, minimize risks and secure competitive advantages in a regulated market. The software also offers tools to meet the requirements of the EU taxonomy and to create reports for various stakeholders such as investors or supervisory authorities.

Support for sustainable business strategies

ESG reporting software is more than a tool - it is a guide to help companies achieve their ESG goals and make sustainable decisions. Whether it is the integration of financial data, the consideration of sustainability aspects or compliance with legal requirements, this software provides companies with the support they need to actively shape the transition to a more sustainable economy.

Who is obliged to provide ESG reporting?

While many companies currently still produce ESG reports on a voluntary basis, reporting is already mandatory for capital market-oriented companies. From January 1, 2025, the obligation will be extended to all large companies, including limited liability partnerships, banks and insurance companies. These include

  • At least 250 employees
  • Net sales of at least 50 million euros
  • A balance sheet total of at least 25 million euros
From the 01.01.2026 the ESG reporting obligation also applies to small and medium-sized capital market-oriented companies (SMEs), provided they meet at least two of the following criteria:
  • At least 10 employees
  • A balance sheet total of at least 450,000 euros
  • Sales revenue of at least 900,000 euros
The ESG reporting obligation is linked to the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) and the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which will be even broader in the future.

The aim of these guidelines is to provide investors with a sound basis for sustainable investments through transparent sustainability reports. The EU taxonomy and the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) also play a key role here.

Important: Micro-enterprises and non-capital-market-oriented SMEs remain exempt from the ESG reporting obligation.

The challenges of ESG reporting

ESG data is often available in different formats: Excel spreadsheets, PDF files or TXT documents characterize the reality in many companies. This diversity makes integration into an ESG reporting system tedious and time-consuming, resulting in a loss of valuable resources.

In addition, constantly growing requirements make work more difficult: no sooner has one report been completed than the next ESG guideline is published.

The uncertainty as to whether the previous sustainability reporting still complies with the legal requirements remains a constant companion. The continuous tightening of standards also increases the pressure to find ever more efficient and precise solutions.

This is where all-in-one software for ESG reporting comes in. It simplifies data collection, harmonizes different formats and reacts automatically to changes in the guidelines. This makes sustainability reporting not only faster, but also legally compliant - and your company is ideally equipped for future requirements.

ESG reporting finally stress-free: with antares RiMIS®

You can see it in every corner of our society: sustainability is here to stay, which is why ESG reporting has now really taken off in many sectors.

With the replacement of the previous Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) by the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), many companies that were not previously obliged to report on ESG have been doing so since 2023. In general, the legal requirements for reporting have become more stringent, which is noticeably increasing the effort involved.

Those who fail to meet their obligations risk painful fines and may even scare away investors or customers. But even if you are not currently obliged to do so, voluntary ESG reporting can still make sense.

Studies show: Companies that take the issue of sustainability seriously have a competitive advantage in the long term:

  • Because they proactively manage risk through ESG reporting
  • Because they reduce costs and curb the waste of resources
  • Because they improve their image and thus strengthen customer loyalty
  • Because they attract new investors
antares RiMIS® helps you to turn ESG into a tool that serves society, nature and your company. With our flexible and user-friendly reporting software, you can design your ESG reporting efficiently and easily comply with legal requirements and reporting standards.

FAQs - frequently asked questions about ESG reporting with antares RiMIS®

An ESG (environmental, social and governance) report is a documented account of a company's environmental, social and corporate practices. It provides transparency about sustainability efforts, performance and impacts in order to inform stakeholders about non-financial aspects.

Since 2023, it has been mandatory for large corporations and capital market-oriented companies such as BASF, RWE, Bosch, Henkel and Telekom to prepare a sustainability report in Germany.

From 2026, the obligation to prepare a sustainability report will also come into force for SMEs. Small and micro enterprises will also have the opportunity to publish sustainability reports voluntarily. However, ESG reporting is not mandatory in this case.

Most sustainability reports are based on the following structure:

  • Introduction and company profile
  • Sustainability strategy and goals
  • Environmental aspects
  • Social aspects
  • Governance structure
  • Key performance indicators
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Risk management
  • Case studies and best practices
  • Reporting standards and framework
  • Outlook
  • Independent audit and its results
This structure can vary depending on the industry, the company and the specific sustainability goals. It is important that it is clear which specific measures a company intends to use to have a positive impact on environmental and social aspects.

antares RiMIS® is the right solution for you if you are looking for an intelligent solution for your risk management that also covers the important area of sustainability reporting.

Do you have special requirements or particular structures and processes that need to be taken into account in your ESG reporting? Thanks to our object-oriented development approach, we can quickly and easily adapt functions and modules to your individual requirements if necessary.

How high the costs will be in your case depends on various factors, such as the desired scope of functionality, the complexity of your reporting system and the number of users.

We can go through these parameters together during a free demo and give you a rough estimate based on comparable projects from the past.

After commissioning, we usually need 2 - 3 weeks lead time to adapt the modules to your needs and prepare the implementation.

The implementation itself is then carried out on a fixed date. After extensive training, your new ESG reporting solution is ready to go.

A CSR guideline (Corporate Social Responsibility) describes the principles and measures that a company implements to promote sustainable and responsible action. It defines how the company integrates social, environmental and ethical requirements into its business processes. CSR policies typically cover topics such as environmental protection, working conditions, human rights, fair business practices and social commitment.
